At the outskirts of the Old City there is also a Holocaust memorial. The small museum is located in Jerusalem, by the church.
Through the use of mainly pictures, it documents the Nazi attempt to annihilate Europe's Jews. There are heartbreaking pictures taken during that horrific period. People lined up and waiting to be taken to death camps. German soldiers beating their Jewish victims and humiliating them. Pictures of people being forced to kneel and sing before being shot. Piles of dead corpses. Ovens for burning the dead.
In glass cases, there are also remains of Torah scrolls that were set on fire by the Nazis, in an ultimate display of contempt and hatred for the beliefs of their victims. Plaques commemorating whole communities who have been murdered.
I am glad that this horrible crime is being documented. People cannot and should not be allowed to forget what happened during Hitler's reign of terror.
However, the display only is about the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Hitler killed 6 million Jews. He also killed between 12 and 18 million other people, mainly Slavs (most of whom were Poles, Ukrainians, Byelorussians and Russians) but also Romani people, German political dissidents, Jehovah's Witnesses. Their deaths were no less tragic, bestial or cruel. They were created by the same God and had their lives stolen from them in the same horrific ways. To ignore them is wrong.
